I'm a conservative, Republican blogger with a libertarian bent. I live in flyover country, in a small town in southwest Missouri and that perspective definitely gives a different color to my politics compared to city dwellers. Professionally, I'm a licensed real estate agent, consultant, manager and cook. Yes, cook. I'm interested in finance, real estate, food, health, wine, beer, cars (especially small British sport cars and high efficiency cars) and technology.

The "5-10 year" argument was used in the early 90s, the late 90s, earlier this decade and, if we don't do something now, will be used again in...5-10 years. If you go to work today, you may not get your paycheck until Friday. Does that mean you should stay home and then complain when Friday rolls around and the paycheck isn't there?

Government has to be in the military R&D business because the military is one of the primary reasons we have a government.  It shouldn't be in that business generally (at least in terms of making decisions about what get's funded and what doesn't) because scientists, engineers and inventors are the best judge of what's worth pursuing from a technical standpoint.  Consumers and business people are the best judge of what's worth pursuing from a financial standpoint.  I don't see Congress, regardless of party, as being better at either of those things than individuals.

The limited and appropriate government role is to encourage research generally through things like a good educational system, a low tax environment to ensure investment and protection of intellectual property rights.
