John McCain compared to Barack Obama

Would a universal healthcare system require a tax increase?
Should marriage be defined as a union between one man and one woman?
Should the U.S. government subsidize corn-based ethanol?
Should Georgia become a member of NATO?
Does the Second Amendment permit any restriction on an individual's right to purchase firearms?

I think that McCain looked like he was checking for the wire.

Wolf Blitzer: I think it's fair to say that McCain has some disdain for Barack Obama.

Jonathan Alter:

I wasn't shocked to learn from a friend of Paulson's, who didn't want to risk his friendship by being identified, that Paulson thinks Obama is much more impressive than McCain in their private talks. (Not that Paulson is as much of an authority on all things financial as he thinks he is.) And it's hardly surprising that the country's last remaining financial grown-ups, Paul Volcker and Warren Buffett, are strongly pro-Obama.

Most frustrating part of the debate for me was when McCain, the "master" on foreign policy, tried to belittle Obama for not knowing the difference between a military strategy and tactic. He stated the surge was a strategy, which is simply false. Check out what this military colonel had to say about McCain's gaffe or maybe misunderstanding about the "surge"...

I'm a retired (1999) Army colonel and was astounded by McCain's confusion about military "strategy" during the debate. I listened to it and then read the applicable area in the transcript. Either he was using language extremely carelessly or he didn't learn some basics in his military career. He was a Navy captain who attended, I believe, the National War College and national security is supposedly his strong suit. It should be second nature.

A good analogy to explain military strategy is a stool with three legs: goals (mission); means (concept of operation); and resources (people and equipment). If the legs are not balanced, you have an unbalanced stool, increasing the likelihood of failure.

The surge added troops (resources) to carry out the counterinsurgency mission of defeating the insurgents and establishing enough stability so that the Iraqis themselves could develop the means of controlling the violence.

It's ironic that the surge's progress has yet to achieve a political settlement, which was the strategy of the mission and the reduction in violence in Iraq which has been shaky the last month, came from direct negotiations with resistance leaders, a premise that McCain seems to disagree when dealing with America's "enemies."

I'm sure Kissinger will pull back from that and the McCain camp will pounce.

McCain is going to get clobbered for this...remember, his friend of 35 years that he knows would never say we should meet with Iran directly without preconditions?

ABC News' Rachel Martin Reports: Former U.S.Secretary of State Henry Kissinger today told an audience in Washington, DC that the U.S. should negotiate with Iran "without conditions" and that the next President should begin such negotiations at a high level.

Okay, you have to drink every time McCain says "Pow" or brings up his Pow experience tonight in the debate. Good luck.

Apparently McCain's bailout plan modification includes less regulation and more tax breaks for businesses.

You know what I think is ironic? That normal people live under this delusion that if the businesses have more tax, they'll pass the tax onto the wages of the regular people. I call that dumb conservative salary people.

Businesses have so many tax loopholes and tax breaks that they pay less than half the amount regular tax payers do. And the conservatives like Sarah Palin praise the small business owners for creating jobs for regular people - what are you stupid? Small business owners pay even LESS tax than giant corporations do.

An S-Corp doesn't have to pay FICA if they take draws, and corporations have more deductions than normal people.

If a business owner can make $70k gross profits and end up paying $1k in taxes after deductions, then they take home $5750 /mo as useable income. A salaried person at $120,000 sees only half of it and thus takes home $5000/mo after taxes. So regardless of expenses, as we all have expenses, a business owner making $70k/year can live the same lifestyle as a salaried six digits person, if not better, and pay a fraction of the taxes.

And yes, I own businesses, that is why I know. It's disgusting. People are so arrogant and steadfast in their illusory worlds.

McCain HAS a viable economic plan.

Yeah, it's called I'm gonna make rich all the people in this world who also can't remember how many houses the own.  That's his plan, and when things with the media get rough, he put a little lipstick on his T&A and trot her out on stage to throw a little red meat to the sea of idiots he calls, "my [blind and feeble] friends", who voted for Bush and didn't learn anything the first 8 years.

Does anyone think Obama's been sounding kind of passive lately in his talking?

I'm wondering if he's saving the juicy stuff for towards the end of the campaign, so he can give a huge hit and leave a lasting impression, instead of revving everyone up early and drifting off at the end.

I definitely believe it is better Obama than McCain because of 2 reasons: his policies and his self-evident higher IQ. I would not trust someone being supported by president Bush, especially if the guy has shown to be as intellectual as Bush (which equals to be as intellectual as a rock!). After reading about both profiles from different political analysts, and taking a look on Obama's beliefs through his opinions noted on this page, I have come to conclude Obama will be the best pick not only for the U.S. but for the whole world.

Barack: "McCain says he'll follow bin Laden to the gates of hell but won't even follow him to the cave where he lives!"

Zing!

REGURGITATED: This sounds like a xenophobic stump from the 50s.

Probably the worst thing that can happen to the US is for yet another "reinventer" to come along and recklessly start everything all over again. I don't know when republicans came up with the idea that their ideas ended up improving anything - they don't!

What America needs is to RESTRICT the ruined policies that enriched Bush and his friends at the cost of more lives than were lost on 9/11, REFLECT on the fact that under a republican administration the rich get richer and everybody else poorer, RESIGN themselves to these facts, REMIND themselves to mind their own business and RELENT on their anger, moralizing, imposition of values that middle America is the first to violate.

McCain HAS a viable economic plan. Obama does not, except saving taxes on those who make over 105K per year. Certainly not the working class.

McCain comes through for America.

1. RETHINK: America must rethink the global views on what America is capable of in our current state of technology, engineering and the demands that face the world.

2. REFORM: America must rise to these demands and compete aggressively in a global economy. We must demand higher quality products and less restricted trade routes for Made in USA components. The USA will exceed all standards of currently mass produced products. The era of depending on currently available shoddy merchandise Made by Slave or Child labor is DONE!

3. REINVENT: America and Americans must reinvent themselves to reach and maintain these standards and by sheer American ingenuity, control the world’s marketplace in the competitive manner as we have always been proud to rule. Can you hear Theodore Roosevelt shouting this?

We have the means to do all of this and more, ready and in place across the USA. The buildings we need sit vacant for the most part. America has the citizenry screaming for new and improved jobs. This is the only direct way to provide new modernized training for a new and modernized world of products.

This will not cost US taxpayers a penny and the government even less. With a nation of investors looking for the next best thing, McCain comes through for them as well. The USA will see a flood of investment support along and a flood of community building programs that are created and controlled from within, rather than by Big Brother.

Americans demand better than what we have been allowed in the past and are eager to learn more and build better lives for ourselves, and future generations.

Senator McCain has provided the new guard for Social Security, the promise of retirement and the dreams that can be realized by Americans who would otherwise be lost or at the mercy of a dying workforce. This is the new workforce for American’s future.

The McCain 3R schools provide a chance for American’s to re-train in the very types of businesses that America needs to survive in a competitive global market.

1. By creating a group of retrained and skilled individuals with the knowledge of what any advanced manufacturing employee must know coupled with the requirements of the employer, the USA will have a base of highly trained employees and willing manufacturing firms.

2. Investors are eager to once again invest into MADE IN USA products and new USA based companies and we will thrive on McCain’s Economic plan as it comes into reality. Governors nationwide, both Republican and Democrat are eager to begin with the 3R’s. The world loves Made in USA quality, exports will be tremendous.

3. USA made products with USA based jobs create a whole new infrastructure for additional USA companies, from Asphalt to Zoos. Manufacturing companies need outside support and America needs jobs. This is the answer!

4. By assuming leases on abandoned stores and factories across America with MC-3R schools and mini-manufacturing training centers, the USA made products can be sold and support the stores. Building owners write off the loss in taxes over a few years!

Although the thousands of new businesses manufacturing USA Made products is exciting enough, the real excitement comes from the massive amount of additional jobs that will be created to provide the new housing, new buildings, new parks, shopping, grocery stores, schools, government outlets and so much more.
