When you evaluate something that is in place to help the population as a whole, examining outliers is not a good measure at best, and purposely misleading at worst. Yes... there have always been black people that got ahead in spite of oppression. I'm not saying affirmative action should put unqualified people in jobs, but where there is a sufficient pool and a company has sufficient spots to fill, then ensuring they are not using unfair factors in their decision-making is important.
