There are circumstances under which I support capital punishment. My current opposition is not to the idea of the capital punishment, but to the practice, as is in US (and the rest of the world) right now.
Morality and religion absolutely should not play a role in public policymaking August 26, 2009: "These acts contradict the faith and must not be done, taught, spread or encouraged," Reuters quoted religious police spokesman [...]. "They must be fought and those performing them must be reported and punished so as to be deterred and their evil restricted." He is talking about circus acts, like juggling, fire-breathing or laying on beds of nails.
Sloth is the worst of the seven deadly sins. Most of the others are not even bad things... Unless practiced in excess, that is.
Parents should have the right to refuse medical care for their children due to religious beliefs. Less state, more personal responsibility.
Government funding should not be available to religious organizations for the purpose of performing a social good. First of all, the government should not be in the business of "performing a social good". If I want to donate to a charity or to a church, I will do it myself, thank you very much. I do not want the government taxing me and giving my money to a church or charity of _their_ choice. Besides, the government and the church should be kept separate.
The Matthew Shepard Bill is not constitutional. It pretty blatantly violates the Equal Protection Clause, and the "All men are created equal" sentiment. Murdering/torturing someone should have exactly the same consequences, regardless of the victim's race, gender, orientation, etc.
Religious compatibility is not an important component to a romantic relationship. It is important for a long term, committed relationship, but not for what most American think of as "romantic relationship".
Prostitution should be legal. I believe it would decrease the negative effects of the illegality of prostitution, such as forced/coerced prostitution, violence, drug use, etc. And of course, it would save the taxpayers on prosecuting the sex workers and their clients.
Political compatibility is not an important component to a romantic relationship. It is important for long term relationships, but not for what most Americans would consider "romantic relationship".
Failure to wear a seat belt should be neither a primary nor a secondary offense; not wearing a seat belt should be legal. That should be a personal choice. And it should be a business choice for insurers to pay, or not pay, for injuries to a person not wearing a seat belt.
Selecting in-vitro embryos based on preferred genetic traits is not immoral. It may be stupid, it may lead to unintended consequences, but it is not immoral.
The jury ruling that awarded a drunk man $2.3 million for being hit by a subway was not appropriate. Being drunk, or high, should disqualify any liability claims.
Bernie Madoff should not be held as an accessory in cases where former investors committed suicide. I believe in direct responsibility (if _you_ pull the trigger, _you_ are guilty, no matter who told you to do so).
A moderate portion of the nation's poor are victims of circumstances beyond their control. While there is enough of laziness and stupidity around, most people still prefer to be well-to-do rather than poor, and they actively work towards that goal.
Scientists cannot prove whether or not the supernatural exists. This is a contradiction in terms. Once it gets known and proven, it is perfectly natural. On the other hand, if you talk about any particular thing currently classified as supernatural, for example telekinesis, then the answer is yes, the scientific metho
Jesus Christ was not a real-life person. There is not a single item of evidence to support this claim.
The Richland County Sheriff should not seek charges against Michael Phelps for allegedly smoking marijuana. I'm for legalizing pot.
Prisons should not be privatized. That would be nothing but breeding ground for corruption and abuse. It would be more humanitarian just to shoot the prisoners.
African Americans should not receive reparations for slavery. Get over it.
Free will does exist. I must say so :)
The Bible should be interpreted figuratively. It's but a collection of myths, legends, mangled history, and morality tales.
Homeless animals should be euthanized. They are danger both direct (a pack of feral dogs is about as dangerous as an average gangbanger) and indirect (diseases) to man and wild animals alike.
The United States should stop using daylight saving time. Yes! Yes! Yes!
The U.S. should not return to the gold standard. Gold standard is on the attic of history, together with barter and cowrie shells. What we need is not gold standard, but wooden gallows for robbers from both government and industry.
There are circumstances under which I support minors being charged criminally as adults. But only on a case-by-case basis.
Scientists should experiment on animals. Better than on humans... And yes, there is a difference between human and animal.
Drugs should be legalized. It is the most effective way of dealing with the drug problem.
The demand side of the drug trade should have a higher priority in America's War on Drugs. And even that only as education and treatment.
A world without religion would be the same. People that kill or become saints because their god told them so, will kill or become saints because little voices in their heads tell them so. It will even out...
Marijuana should be legal. Delegalization of drugs create more problems than solve.
People should not stop using the n-word. No, in the sense it should not be banned. Yes, in a sense people should not be going around offending other people. But is is just silly thinking that removing a word would remove the attitude from the people. I bet I can (if I wish) offend anyone, regard
There is a non-religious basis for universal principles of morality. There are only two universal principles of morality (i.e., taboo on incest and on unprovoked killing of a member of the same tribe). Both are strictly evolutionary (i.e., no society without these two principles survived long enough to matter), and so the
Religious beliefs are not vital to society There are known healthy and happy societies without religion, so no, it is not vital.
The government should allow same-sex couples to adopt children. Any loving family is better than no family at all.
The government should not ban books it deems inappropriate in public schools and libraries. Once we give the government the right to ban books, we can as well ask Putin or Castro to be our president.
The death penalty is not an effective crime deterrent. It is well documented that the decrease in crime correlates mostly to the probability of punishment, and only in a very insignificant degree to the severity of punishment. Since carrying out the death penalty is an extremely low probability event, it is,
Undocumented immigrants should not be granted in-state tuition benefits. That is a travesty.
Marijuana for medicinal use should be legalized. Most of the medicines are potent poisons when misused, so that should not be a problem. Also, it seems that there exist evidence of marijuana being helpful -- so there is really no reason to prohibit it.
Mormons are Christian. They claim they are Christians, that is enough for me.
Faith-based organizations should pay taxes. It is time to move away from the state subsidies (yes, a tax break is a subsidy) to religious groups.
