Online news should not be free. Some of it can be. But it's up to those who create it to figure out how they're going to absorb the costs (or make profit).
Non-profit funding is a viable way to sustain news organizations. We already have it, and it appears to work. (But, of course, only a few, not as a model for the industry.)
I have no idea if it was intentional. Don't put them in jail. But it certainly appears to cross the line.
Some are, some aren't. Just like the real world.
They'll decrease in circulation, and also become available online. But I think (hope) that there will always be a segment of our society who want and are willing to pay for the print version.
The government should not provide financial assistance to the print journalism industry. I think it's like church and state. There has to be a wall, or the journalism is compromised.
Newspaper organizations are not necessary to maintain journalistic standards. Turns out the medium isn't the message. News stories aren't dependent on the physical format of newspapers. HOWEVER - the existing model has worked well for journalism, and some sort of arbiter, if not gatekeeper, is still required, if we are ever going to sort through all this stuff. This can be a model of peer feedback, but there has to be some mechanism, or all the trash will rise to the top. SOME "organization" is necessary.
Newspapers should not be publicly financed.
The U.S. should enact the Free Flow of Information Act.
The decibel level of television commercials should be regulated. Hear, hear!
It will require exceptions and explanations for certain types of uses.
Free speech includes the right to be tasteless.
