Some bloggers have journalism credentials or experience and sources that reach out to them. You have to do some fact checking and use caution, but bloggers are often present at the creation of news.
Paparazzi are scum of the Earth and paying for unauthorized pictures ought to be illegal.
I'm a beer drinker and I tend to drink beers that would never advertise beach scenes of drunk college kids with lovable pets. Kids don't need to be reminded of how much they want to go to college because of the fun college kids have with beer.
Fox News is not "fair and balanced." George Orwell probably never really believed that Republicans would adopt his warnings... thtat if you call a duck a goose often enough and invariably enough, people will believe it... or be scared to contradict it. Fox News is a duck.
Newspapers should not be publicly financed. Public finance of the main sources of journalism is a very bad idea. The public would not fund stories that are perceived to not be in the public interest. Who wants that kind of journalism?
NBC should not have rejected PETA's Super Bowl advertisement. ... to not dirty the wholesomeness of 300 lb. men desperately trying to destroy each other with the spectacle of women posing suggestively with broccoli? This is family values? Actually, PETA is laughing all the way to the bank... theirs is the Super Bowl ad that everyone is talking about.
The Internet is the most powerful and effective watchdog that could possibly have ever chomped at the asses of lazy, dishonest, and inventive journalists.
Facebook merits a higher valuation than MySpace. Facebook has more potential than MySpace. Facebook has a tremendous first-mover advantage with families across generations. If they found a way to sell a premium version for even a nominal amount, they'd make decent money.
Twitter is a feature that has taken off because of its simplicity. That also makes it really easy to duplicate - as is evidenced by the many knock-offs. If Google wanted to be in that business, they could just build a twitter-type functionality to their existing lineup. The only benefit they would get by buying twitter is no competition - which they don't need.
Newspaper organizations are necessary to maintain journalistic standards. Print or online newspapers set the standards. Without them you'd only get doublespeak like the agenda-driven, Fox News, presenting itself as fair and balanced... straight out of 1984.
Online news should not be free. You can't run a newsroom on an advertisement-only business model.
The new Facebook user interface is better than the old. I found the old Facebook more confusing than the new. I think they managed to work in a lot of complexity into something reasonably manageable.
The media does not have a social responsibility to promote positive body images. Parents have a responsibility to immunize their kids from media manipulation. What next... can't portray junkies in movies because it promotes drug addiction? Silly....
States should charge sales tax for online purchases. Why have a double-standard that hurts the people that bring jobs into your local economy? Would you really prefer that people buy from Amazon than Mom and Pop?
Tim Russert's death did not merit the media coverage it received. I can't say I knew much about Tim Russert or even ever watched him at all. I have no idea how his death could possibly have been turned into something significant to the country. It's great that people mention him, but there's no reason for some big memor
Unfortunately, any news that fails to entertain won't be watched by anybody. The trick is to be entertaining just to the extent necessary. The problems are the outlets that make entertainment drive news. Of course, these are nowhere near as problematic as
If they had, Bush would be in federal prison instead of awaiting a presidential pardon.
In terms of actual "news" organizations, it has a chilling effect. It's not reasonable to expect independence from people that are going to get fired if they don't fall in line with corporate expectations.
There is a simple technological reason - it will one day be as convenient to have an online thing in your hand that is as lightweight and easy on the eyes as a newspaper... and on which you don't have to practice the dreaded "subway fold" searching out th
Most definitely. Anonymity is granted with rights and responsibilities. If major news organizations adopted this as a policy, leaks that are reported anonymously would carry actual weight - since there would be an expectation that the leaker knows he's go
If she's too young to have a sex life, she's too young to take sexy pictures.
I'm changing my mind on this one. There's no reason that somebody should be compelled to testify to anything unless they themselves have committed a crime.... I may or may not be doing "the right thing" by protecting a source, but it should be up to me. O
I have to think that more perspectives are better than less. In particular when you're talking about "news" as opposed to "analysis", anybody on the scene with a cell phone camera can capture moments that are otherwise lost.
This is wrong on so many levels!!! First, celebrities' personal lives are not "news", but gossip. Second, minding the affairs of others - while perfectly legal - is undignified and offensive, damaging to society and a personal admission that you "have no
