Meditation should be incorporated into education. Perhaps in the curriculum of an Eastern Asian studies elective or in the curriculum for health classes.
Prayer should be permitted in public schools. If someone wants to pray he or she can pray. You just can't mandate or enforce prayer, and staff has to be neutral and cannot compel anyone to pray. But if a student wishes to pray, then what convincing argument is there to stop them? It's an aspect of their sense of self, not unlike the clothes they wear or the songs they like to listen to.
Parents do not have an obligation to pay for their children's college.
The public school systems in America would not be improved if they were federalized. It'd make it worse, because to standardize to such a large group would mean that all standards would have to be dropped significantly. If standards were enforced to be raised across the board though, I think that'd be great, but in practice it doesn't seem to work that way.
Higher education is a right. Since it's an obstacle to being as advantaged towards success in life, it shouldn't be limited to money, because money doesn't define quality of person or potential.
The government should not offer cash incentives for better student performance. I can already imagine the scandals and corruption.
Failing public schools should not lengthen their days. Definitely not solving the problem. It would actually make it worse. Educational success is a function of quality, not time.
There is political bias in academia.
Public schools should be required to offer home economics. So when your kid goes to college he or she doesn't have to microwave three times a day.
Abstinence-only sex education should not be taught in schools. Since when has that ever worked?
Schools should not punish students for not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Sounds dystopian.
College entry exams should play no role in admissions decisions. Proves nothing.
Sex education should begin during middle school (6th-8th grade). Many are getting pregnant during this time. We have to stop the bleeding and let young people make educated decisions about their lives and future.
Standardized tests are not an effective tool for measuring student learning. They measure one's ability to take standardized tests, and they discriminate against people who have high proficiency in one area and low proficiency in another because the score is taken as a whole.
Arts programs are an essential part of education. Let us not forget we are human (although when I was in school I also complained about how pointless art class was)
The classroom is not an appropriate venue for teachers to express their political opinions. I thought that classrooms were for teaching. Our tax dollars on public education aren't for propaganda. Let the students think for themselves.
High school students should not be required to pass an exit exam in order to earn a diploma. The effect is negligible. This will only continue to perpetuate what is already today. Incompetent teachers in impoverished areas will raise incompetent, disadvantaged students and competent teachers in affluent areas will raise competent students. Attemp
