Columbus Day should not be celebrated as an official holiday. @brianr What debate?!
Racism has not played a role in opposition to Barack Obama. There are undoubtedly racists, and there is undoubtedly racism, but in the health care debate, they're not opposing Obama because he's not white.
There should be term limits for elected officials. But I think there should be a threshold for extension, say, 75-80% of the vote. If someone controlled that much of the vote through money, though, then the system is already broken and it wouldn't matter anyways.
Sarah Palin should not pursue political office again. Considering she stepped down from such a serious position in a smaller state, I don't believe she's cut out for politics and she's lost what little respect I had for her.
Media outlets should use the word 'torture' when covering Bush-era detainee policies.
Protests over the Iranian election will not lead to a revolution. There's a lot of hype right now, but I don't get the feeling that the citizens are going to overthrow the government or anything of that nature.
The Obama Administration should not issue a statement of support to the Iranian election uprising. Absolutely not. There is a chance that ... the person whose name I cannot spell was elected legitimately, or that the recount might prove that he was elected legitimately, even if it's a 1% chance. I think the election was fishy, I think that it was most likely rigged, but as a world leader Obama cannot issue such a statement until the proof is there. It would further deteriorate US-Iranian relations in the long term if Ah-guy stays in power, and there's no further need to incite violence and bloodshed in the short term. Furthermore it's rarely appropriate for a world leader to publicly issue statements of support of uprisings. The wording of this issue is borderline absurd to begin with. Now if you asked, "Should the Obama Administration issue support of a recount", it'd be a little more reasonable but you're still meddling in other countries' politics and the answer for me would still be no, absolutely not. Regardless this is all diplomacy. Everyone else of course, can say and investigate freely.
Israel will not take military action against Iran. That would be a political and diplomatic catastrophe. Netanyahu is bluffing to pressure Israeli allies to take action.
Bill O'Reilly should bear responsibility for the murder of Dr. Tiller. @BrianR put it the best in terms of practicality, and @JasoNunes put it the best in terms of conceptually. O'Reilly knew the guy had already been shot and attacked, and yet continued his attacks, and even though O'Reilly didn't commit murder personally, but he does bear some responsibility for inciting hatred when he had full knowledge of the situation.
The U.S. invasion and occupation has had a negative effect on Iraq.
People convicted of felonies should have voting rights.
The government should always permit late term abortions.
'Waterboarding' should be characterized as torture. According to the Geneva Conventions' definition, it is. What I don't understand though, is why people want to debate whether it is or not. It's like they're backing down or being cowardlike in defending their beliefs. If you believe that we have to torture some people to "keep millions of Americans safe", then say it. But we signed the Geneva Conventions, they defined what torture is, and in that sense we tortured. Debate principle, not semantics.
The Obama Administration will have no impact on the Middle East peace process. I agree with @ElizabethRoss . I don't think anything we do is going to have much of an impact on what's going on over there.
It is not appropriate for a sign that reads, "Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds" to appear on government property alongside religious displays. The wording is inappropriate due to its confrontational nature. You can explain the negatives of religion without being a jerk about it. That is a self-serving sign that has no progressive qualities about it. It's not like religious people will read that and suddenly want to fight back against corruption and the wrongs that religious leaders have committed. It's just a publicity stunt so some guy can feel empowered.
The Republican Party should try to rebrand itself. Regardless of how I've been branded as a hippy liberal on the site and the fact that most of my stands are supposedly liberal anyways, I actually agree with and acknowledge a lot of "conservative" concepts, and I think the party has a lot to offer. I'm not sure why the GOP turned into an extremist polarizing hatemongering cesspool of double-yoo tee eff (u go rush!!), but if we go back to the roots of what it really means to be a Republican, I think it could garner support again, and go back to making America the marriage of two different pools of thoughts into a happy medium.
Assault weapons should be illegal. Do you really need to ask?
Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party will have a negative effect on the GOP.
President Obama's first 100 days were satisfactory. Overall the man did what could be done in 100 days. Not like our problems will disappear overnight, but a lot of steps were taken in the right directions.
The U.S. should take military action in Pakistan.
The U.S. should have diplomatic relations with Venezuela.
The Department of Justice should not prosecute CIA officials who carried out Bush Administration interrogation methods. Should the army be held personally responsible for the Iraq War? Just following orders. It's not like they can just say no and get away with it.
The Tea Party protests are not a grassroots movement. Wiki says ~ A grassroots movement (often referenced in the context of a political movement) is one driven by the constituents of a community. The term implies that the creation of the movement and the group supporting it is natural and spontaneous, highlighting the differences between this and a movement that is orchestrated by traditional power structures.
Paying taxes is patriotic. It's the amount of taxes that's the disparity between left and right though.
Pirates should not be officially labeled as terrorists.
The U.S. should not take military action against Somali pirates’ land bases. They aren't significant enough a threat to invest the resources at the present time.
A world free of nuclear weapons is not achievable. There's always a power hungry loony bin out there, but that's part of life you know?
Timothy Geithner should remain Secretary of the Treasury.
The economic policies of the Obama Administration will not lead the U.S. towards socialism.
Rush Limbaugh will never run for political office. Rush is popular because he can be an ass in public. You can't be a completely polarizing partisan piece of garbage and be a successful politican. Pardon my language.
President Obama's outlook on the economy has been neither too optimistic nor pessimistic. I feel like Obama's acknowledged that we do have a serious problem, but that it is a problem that can be fixed if we take the appropriate steps to address it. It's neither optimistic nor pessimistic, but rather realistic.
Republicans are more responsible for the federal deficit than Democrats.
President Obama should push towards a bipartisan approach to governing. In the sense that you need to see a problem from multiple perspectives to make an educated and informed decision on what the best route is.
Senator Roland Burris should resign.
The government should regulate population growth.
Hugo Chavez's leadership has had a positive impact on Venezuela.
The U.S. should not ban funding for international family planning groups that perform abortions and/or lobby for abortion rights.
Michael Steele is not a good choice to head the Republican National Committee. The GOP could've done better. They should've picked a progressive bipartisan fiscal conservative as opposed to an extremist social conservative.
Traditional Islamic face-coverings should not be prohibited in European countries.
Rush Limbaugh's comments about "wanting President Obama to fail" were not appropriate.
