VY till I die
by RiSK on 9/12/2008 2:53:30 AM
Ed. Note: This is a cross-post from my UT Sports blog Hash Marks. Boy, is VY having a tough time of it. I’ll admit, when I heard he left the season opener with an injury, part of me hoped it would keep him out a few weeks so he could take a deep breath and reset. [...] Continue »
Thank You Art Pennington
by RiSK on 9/5/2008 4:18:44 PM
I just got something very unexpected in the mail. An envelope from Art Pennington with two autographed post cards and a hand signed letter. He must have gotten when I made a donation on pay pal, but I’ll be honest it was such a small donation that I do not feel like I deserve him [...] Continue »
Chalmers and Arthur missing out on needed education
by RiSK on 9/3/2008 6:46:38 PM
How exactly is tossing Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur from the NBA’s rookie transition program supposed to help anything? The former Jayhawks were discovered with marijuana and women in their hotel room and promptly kicked out of the program. Orientation week is all about how to handle the ... Continue »
Corresponding with the Houston Chronicle
by RiSK on 9/2/2008 9:40:34 PM
I have 23 primary destinations on the Internet. The Houston Chronicle blogs page is one of them, thanks to Longhorn beat writer Joe Duarte’s UT sports blog. He’s a friend, and it’s a fine blog. Sometimes, I check out the other blogs, and a few days ago I read a Chonicle Reader̵... Continue »
A Clemens Got Arrested
by RiSK on 9/1/2008 6:25:20 PM
Roger Clemen’s son, Koby Clemens, got arrested along with two of his Salem Avalanche teammates, Mark Ori and Jimmy Goethals. Not many details have come out yet, but apparently they got in a fight in the parking lot of a place called Mac and Bob’s Restaurant. Clemens and Ori were just arr... Continue »
Waste not, want not
by RiSK on 8/29/2008 8:43:38 AM
So, I’m trying to teach myself how to cook. Of course, that’s only fun if you’re being creative. For that reason, I try inventing my own recipes. So far, I’ve had some success. Here’s a trio of companion recipes. On today’s menu is the attractively titled Vegetabl... Continue »
I Would Feel Used
by RiSK on 8/28/2008 4:17:16 PM
One day after signing a one year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs kicker Jay Feely was cut. He was brought in to compete for a roster spot with Connor Barth and Nick Novak and when they performed better than he did during a two day “kick off” Feely was cut. I get the impression [...] Continue »
Obama’s nomination official
by RiSK on 8/27/2008 8:08:57 PM
Historic moment today, it will be some time before we understand where the nomination of Barack Obama ranks among major moments in the history of race relations in these United States, but it seems inarguably to be the culmination (for now) of the Civil Rights Movement. If Obama loses the upcoming e... Continue »
American efforts to coddle children maintain momentum
by RiSK on 8/26/2008 5:10:34 AM
Sometimes I get so damn irritated I can hardly express myself. I suppose this is one of those types, so I’ll keep my input to a minimum. In Connecticut, a nine-year-old kid has been banned from his baseball league because of his 40 MPH fastball. No, he hasn’t hit a single batter, but ... Continue »
Find the bias
by RiSK on 8/25/2008 2:01:46 AM
Take a look at the dom photo of Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal. Then read the caption that ran under the photo. Can you spot the manipulative use of language? It’s pretty simple really. The prisoners are identified simply as Georgians, making it sound as if they are innocent captives o... Continue »
Finally Someone Stands Up To The Chinese
by RiSK on 8/21/2008 7:00:45 PM
According to the Yahoo sports blog “4th Place Medal” the International Olympic Committee has started an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin. I expected it to take years for something like that to happen. I think they should be investigating the whole team personally, b... Continue »
The verdict is in on E:60
by RiSK on 8/20/2008 9:39:31 PM
So I’m sitting here watching ESPN’s news magazine show, E:60, and I’m about ready to vomit. When the show was announced, I was excited at the prospect of deep sports journalism on TV. When the first couple shows felt contrived, I gave them a pass. It was still in its infancy aftera... Continue »
Medalist disqualified for no good reason
by RiSK on 8/16/2008 1:40:58 PM
I can’t think of any legitimate reason to strip someone of a medal besides discovery of cheating. The Olympics is all about the competition. Everything else, even temper tantrums, should be secondary. The International Olympic Committee doesn’t quite see it the same way though and disqualified a Swe... Continue »
The Olympics are actually pretty entertaining
by RiSK on 8/15/2008 3:09:17 AM
I have a confession to make. I’m enjoying these Olympics. Before they began, I thought I’d hardly watch them. But I caught the opening ceremonies, grudgingly admitted that it was an impressive spectacle and was intrigued. I was ready to give the games a chance. Boy howdy was that a good ... Continue »
Good Move For Vick?
by RiSK on 8/12/2008 11:49:22 PM
As soon as 2009 Michael Vick might find himself in a football uniform and playing professional football. Team? Unknown. League? Most likely not the NFL. Another new football league is on it’s way in. This one, the United Football League touts itself as home to the “stars of tomorrow̶... Continue »
