Thumbs up to President-elect Barack Obama on Monday's official nominations of Sen. Hillary Clinton to be secretary of State and current Defense Secretary Robert Gates to stay on in that role, at least temporarily. But thumbs down to Mr. Obama's troubling decision to nominate Eric Holder as attorney general.

We've editorialized previously that Mrs. Clinton is a deft choice for State. Not only have we personally seen her command of the world stage, the fact that the president-elect has brought into his administration his once-strident political foe is a good indication that he's encouraging all viewpoints.
