"Rudy Is 1, McCain Is 1a"

Newsday

WASHINGTON - Long Island Rep. Peter King is offering a home-state hand to Rudolph Giuliani's budding presidential campaign.

King has agreed to try to rustle up support on Capitol Hill for the ex-mayor's bid - which King believes is for real.

King is teaming with Rep. Vito Fossella (R-Staten Island) and Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) to build Giuliani's support among Hill Republicans.

One of King's first jobs is getting Giuliani to Washington to meet with Hill movers and shakers - something Giuliani's main rival, Arizona Sen. John McCain, can do most any time. King backed McCain's 2000 primary bid over Gov. George W. Bush, but is sticking with the ex-mayor this time.

Nothing against McCain, King said, but "I just think Rudy is more on target when it comes to international terrorism. Rudy is 1, and McCain is 1-a."

U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced new endorsements from members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

"I've known John McCain for years, and I can say without a doubt that he is a man of the highest personal integrity," said Congressman Peter King. "When you look at John McCain's record, you will find he has consistently been a strong voice for defending traditional conservative values, for ending wasteful spending in Washington, and for ensuring our nation's security. I am proud to join with my colleagues from the House in endorsing John McCain for President of the United States."
