Professional golfers should not be considered athletes.
There is nothing athletic about golf. Its a sport, but they aren't athletes. Just like Nascar thinks its a sport, and they sure as hell aren't athletes.

A fat old guy with a bum hip can still play golf decently. In my opinion to be considered an athlete you need to be in top form mentally and physicially.
A fat old guy with a bum hip can still do a lot of things decently. Basketball, running, tennis. You don't see any professional golfers who are at once fat, old and suffer from a bum hip.
I'm not sure what "top form" is, but I'm pretty sure that you'll find athletes in all shapes and sizes. Not all athletes look like LeBron James or Dean Karnazes.

@gethro
I've played golf for years (I swear). I grow tired of telling people that physical strength hardly plays ANY factor in golf. A hardcore weight-lifter might be able to power the ball a decent distance, but a scrawny guy will be able to hit it just as far if not farther with the proper swing. I know golf takes a fair amount of mental discipline, but it has no phsyical discipline. A fat old guy with a bum hip can still play golf decently. In my opinion to be considered an athlete you need to be in top form mentally and physicially. Not something that everyone can do.

sigh...I'm growing tired of commenting on all the ignoramus' on this site who are getting this all wrong. Have you ever played golf before, or are you basing what you think on what you see on television? The "athleticism" of golf is hand-eye coordination, strength, balance (I swear).
