Exclusive sales agreements between service providers and handset makers are not anti-competitive. Jeez! Every time a company refuses to tweak their business model to make you happy, you want the government to force them to change. Buy a Blackberry and shut up already!
There should be a permanent moratorium on state and local taxes on Internet access. Why would we want to discourage use of a medium which is energy efficient, broadens communication access among our citizenry and adds significantly to the productivity of both business and govt.?
I would not prefer a laptop with a touchscreen interface. Almost 40 years ago, HP introduced a touchscreen desktop PC claiming it would ultimately eliminate the need for a mouse. Didn't happen. And the laptop touchscreen will prove to be a novelty as well.
The price was the deciding factor in my most recent purchase of a portable media player. A $49.99 Zen bought me all the media player capacity/features I needed so why spend more? And it's compatible with my home AudioRequest system.
Web sites with user-generated editorial content should not compensate contributors. A fair price is what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. So long as users are willing to generate editorial content for free, they are, by definition, getting fairly compensated.
I would read books on a portable electronic device. At the turn of the last century, I'm certain that legions of Luddites said they'd never ride in a consarned horseless carriage. Get serious, folks. You'll read electronic books.
Member opinions are more interesting to read than public figure opinions on whereIstand.com. Public figures...lessee, ya got politicians (AKA self-serving liars), media stars (AKA airheads), government officials (AKA incompetents) and sports stars (AKA steroid junkies). Who cares?
Employers should have the right to fire workers for content posted on social networking sites. In the U.S., "Employment at Will" says either the employer or employee can sever the relationship at any time for any reason, absent those prohibited by labor contract or law (e.g., race, sex, etc.)
whereIstand is an effective forum for influencing people's opinions. I believe any forum that presents diverse opinions has the capacity to broaden people's views and this site's no exception. But like Geoff, I'd like to see the comments treatment enhanced.
Frequent use of portable media players does present a serious risk of hearing loss. These things won't endanger the seven responsible teenagers in America. But the others are in grave danger of having "What'dya say?" replace "Whassup?" as their favorite expression.
whereIstand is an effective forum for conveying complex opinions. But only for those who have both the desire and the ability to succinctly and cogently express the mere essence of their argument in addition to their vote.
High-speed Internet access should not be free. Thus far, I haven't seen folks lining up to donate the equipment or labor to provide such access. Until that happens, consumers still need to pay. That's how a market allocates scarce resources.
In the long run, would the United States be better off holding out for something it can call "peace with honor" or would it be better to cut our losses by announcing an exit strategy and brokering the best deal we can? holding out for something it ca Hold out for Iraqi sovereignty and secure access to their oil. If Iran takes over, the next war (and there'll be one, even w/Obama) is gonna be UGLY! (Who drafted the crappy options on this issue?)
If a nuclear weapons program is discovered in Iran, I would support a preemptive military strike. Providing that it's made by Israel and not the U.S.
The U.S. should convert to the metric system. Conversion to metric makes sense...in maybe 25 years. But first, let's recover from the RE/credit crises, fix SS & Medicare funding, re-vamp our healthcare system & become energy independent.
Artificial Intelligence eventually will become a danger to humanity. Artificial intelligence...uh, are we talking about George W. Bush here? Then yes, it's already become a danger to humanity.
Computer literacy is not an important qualification for the presidency. C'mon, how's that relevant to the job duties? In 2000, Gore claimed that he'd "created the Internet"! Is that the kind of crap we'd have to listen to if we called it an "important qualification"?
Technological advancements tend to improve human life. I invite everyone who thinks otherwise to get off the grid and leave their electricity for those of us who will put it to good use.
God is infallible. Sure, why not? We created him so I guess we can make him whatever we want.
Cell phones should not be banned in public schools. But only if/when teachers assert enough discipline within their classrooms to keep their use controlled. I'm not optimistic...
Firefox will not surpass Internet Explorer in global market share. I use Firefox and think it's superior to IE. But don't underestimate the value of a predominant market share and MS linkages. Look how many folks still use AOL, a real loser of a product...
Nintendo Wii should be considered a form of exercise. Right, and that goes for masturbation, too. Jeez, you couch potatoes will do ANYTHING to get exercise credit!
Man is not infallible. George W. Bush. 'Nuff said?
There is no link between cell phone use and cancer. But there IS a link between those who think cell phones cause cancer and those who swear they saw Elvis in Des Moines last Thursday.
