"The game seems indestructible"

Baseball will again overcome negative headlines

If you think baseball is going to pay any real price for its negative headlines, you haven't been paying attention. Despite its countless off-the-field headlines, despite what figures to be a scintillating congressional hearing this week, the game keeps climbing.

Bud Selig will never lead the league in integrity - witness his selection of the profoundly conflicted George Mitchell to lead the steroids investigation - but he's one of the sharper businessmen and diplomats out there. He keeps the 30 owners in line, maintains relative peace with the Players Association and pushes forward periodic innovations that enhance the product.

Baseball set an attendance record in 2007, and there's little reason to think it won't top itself this season.

The game seems indestructible, immune to the myriad afflictions thrown its way and growing rapidly.
