Tierney is confident that the bill will pass by the end of the year, saying there is plenty of time remaining over the next few months. The congressman said he will continue to fight to keep a provision in the plan that says 85 percent of the money going into the health care system must be spent on health care, while the rest can go to marketing, salaries and other costs.

He also will work to keep provisions in that protect retirees and their health care coverage.

"People want something to be done," Tierney said.

The United States National Health Insurance Act (HR676) establishes a new American national health insurance program by creating a single payer health care system. The bill would create a publicly financed, privately delivered health care program that uses the already existing Medicare program by expanding and improving it to all U.S. residents, and all residents living in U.S. territories. The goal of the legislation is to ensure that all Americans, guaranteed by law, will have access to the highest quality and cost effective health care services regardless of one’s employment, income, or health care status.

I have disagreed with President Bush on Iraq from its start and I voted against going to war in 2002,
Then, it was the wrong war launched for the wrong, and we now know untruthful, reasons. Now it has deteriorated into a civil war for the Iraqis and a quagmire for the United States. We should:
• Set a date certain for Iraqi national troops to replace U.S. troops on the ground and redeploy the U.S. troops elsewhere out of Iraq. Iraqi troops will stand up only when U.S. troops stand down.

• We should deploy special operations troops and air power in the region if circumstances should require them, as well as committing to maintain no permanent U.S. bases or troops within Iraq.

• We should launch a multi-point diplomatic and financial initiative aimed at developing and joining an international coalition of those willing to wage an effective reconstruction of Iraq, stabilization of the region and settlement of the Palestinian/Israeli issue.

• We must give more attention and resources to the growing destabilization of Afghanistan.
