For over 12 years, I have argued to change existing laws to help West Virginians of all ages get more mental health and substance abuse programs paid for by their insurance plans. I am so proud to report that those efforts have finally culminated in the enactment of the Mental Health Parity Act as part of the economic stabilization bill. This new law finally ends the discriminatory practices of insurance companies by bringing insurance coverage for mental health services in line with traditional health care benefits. This will go a long way to help reduce the stigma of mental illness and provides a beacon of hope for the more than 735,000 West Virginians whose mental health coverage will improve.
