The Green Party of the United States called upon President Obama to end the economic blockade of Cuba, following a nearly unanimous vote in the United Nations on October 28 condemning the decades-old US policy. "If President Obama is willing to accept the Nobel Peace prize, he should show the world that he is committed to peace. The US continues to impose severe economic hardship on the Cuban people primarily to attract a small percent of the vote in the Florida Presidential election. It's time for President Obama and Congress to acknowledge that the Cold War is long over and rejoin those countries that promote peace and justice in the international community, said Steve Herrick co-chair of the Green Party's International Committee.

Congress wants to create a new wall of shame comparable to the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. It would be environmental nightmare, disrupting wildlife and damaging the Rio Grande's delicate ecosystem as well as a monument to the paranoia, racism, and enforced poverty that have plagued and separated indigenous peoples of the Americas for centuries. Whether our brothers and sisters live above or below the US border, we are all the same people, and need to break down these psychological borders, not reinforce them.

By backing off on a withdrawal timetable for the sake of compromise with President Bush, Democrats in Congress are opening the door for unending war in Iraq. Democratic leaders pretend to speak for Americans who oppose the war, but they've limited their challenge to the White House to a nonbinding symbolic resolution, vague timetables about escalation and withdrawal of combat troops, and benchmarks that allow US corporations to gain control over Iraqi oil production, while authorizing supplemental funding for the war. If they really opposed the war, Democrats in either chamber in Congress could simply refuse to pass a bill providing war funding, forcing President Bush to withdraw US troops

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Party leaders urged Congress, as it debates a nonbinding resolution on President Bush's proposal to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq, to reject a discussion of the war on strategic grounds, and instead address the war as a criminal act of military aggression.

Greens called on Democrats and Republicans in Congress who claim to oppose the war to interrupt President Bush's agenda in Iraq by cutting off funding for the U.S. occupation.

Congress must treat the Iraq invasion as a criminal atrocity, requiring impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney, and investigation and criminal prosecution of those responsible for the war," said Rebecca Rotzler, co-chair of the Green Party and Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York.
