Rep. Gene Green today voted in support of H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This legislation will help Americans become more globally competitive and energy independent, modernize our infrastructure and healthcare systems, invest in the future of education, while providing unprecedented accountability and transparency. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was approved by a vote of 246-183, and will be sent to President Obama next week for his signature.

The “Long-term Energy Assurance and Security Enhancement Act of 2008” or “LEASE Act” includes provisions that would: allow environmentally responsible oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and in the Gulf of Mexico; permit states the option to develop resources closer to their shores; modernize the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve and allow release of oil onto the market; help curb energy speculation that may drive up prices; and establish a fund for alternative energy development, conservation, and public transportation programs .

“This plan offers serious solutions to our serious problems,” Green said. “We need to be less dependent on foreign oil and develop America’s conventional and renewable resources. Developing the alternative energy sources of the future is essential, but in the meantime we must expand production of the domestic resources we already have.”

In a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FCC chairman Kevin Martin, 72 members of Congress expressed their opposition to the XM-Sirius deal, saying it would harm consumers.

"On its face, we believe that sanctioning the marriage of the only competitors in the satellite radio market would create a monopoly, which would be devastating to consumers," the lawmakers said.

Chief authors of the letter are Reps. Gene Green, D-Texas, and Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., a senior Republican of the House Judiciary Committee that oversees the Justice Department.
