"The President's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform is currently evaluating ways we can simplify the federal income tax system. While I agree that making federal taxes easier to understand is long overdue, simplification cannot be achieved by penalizing Long Island's homeowners.

One of the suggestions put forth by the panel is to further limit the mortgage interest tax deduction that is one of the critical benefits of homeownership. Currently, a homeowner can deduct interest up to $1 million dollars, but some reports have the Panel looking into decreasing the maximum deduction to as low as $350,000.

The mortgage interest deduction is a great incentive for encouraging homeownership among those who might not otherwise be able to afford a home. Currently, more than 37 million taxpayers save $70 billion annually from the mortgage interest deduction. Thanks in part to the tax breaks home ownership affords, we have achieved historic rates of homeownership over the past decade.

However, any new limits to the deduction would be devastating to Long Island's working families.

(WASHINGTON) Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (NY-4) introduced HR 1312, a bill reauthorizing the federal ban on assault weapons, which expired on September 13, 2004.

“Following the General Accounting Office’s Report indicating that suspected terrorists are purchasing firearms, the federal ban on assault weapons is needed now more than ever,” said McCarthy. “It makes no sense that the very people we are fighting in the War on Terror are allowed to arm themselves with military style assault weapons right here within our borders.”

S. 352, the Digital TV Delay Act, will extend the date of the conversion to digital transmissions from February 17, 2009 to June 12, 2009. Additionally, the bill gives those on the NTIA’s waiting list additional time to get the coupons they need. Additionally, the bill gives those whose coupons had expired an opportunity to apply for replacements. Even with the delay, the bill preserves the ability of public safety entities to use the DTV spectrum before the new transition date, ensuring that in times of emergency the necessary bandwidth would be available to coordinate appropriate responses.

“Because more and more households utilize their television as a primary source of news and information, I felt it imperative to delay the transition and ensure the preparedness of all American households for this change,” said Rep. McCarthy.

To that end, I have cosponsored a bill introduced by my colleague from Long Island, Congressman Steve Israel that would tax bonuses at 100% for companies like AIG, who receive TARP funding. The bonus bailout rate would apply only to the bonus portion of an individual’s taxable income. Currently the IRS holds 25% from bonuses less than $1 million and 35% for a bonus of more than $1 million. Taxing these bonuses at 100% would not only send an important cautionary message to AIG and other TARP recipients, it will help taxpayers recoup some of our money.

McCarthy knocks Gillibrand as choice for Senate

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy said yesterday Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand's gun control views make her unacceptable for the U.S. Senate and threatened a primary challenge in 2010 if Gov. David A. Paterson selects the Hudson Democrat to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton.

McCarthy, who became a prominent gun-control advocate after her husband died and her son was injured in the 1993 massacre at the Long Island Rail Road's Merillon Avenue station that killed six people and injured 19 others, said she is "furious" about reports that Paterson today may select Gillibrand, who last year earned an "A" grade from the National Rifle Association.

"I've spent 15 years trying to prevent gun violence in this country, and if he does pick her and if no one goes and primaries her, I will primary her," McCarthy said. "I will do that. I'm not going to give up on this. I'm not going to let New York State get represented by someone who gets a 100 percent rating from the NRA."
