I think the real debate...is not on whether we should retain the electoral college but rather what we should replace it with. Clearly I support the direct election alternative, but there are other proposals with some merit which are also being considered...All of the alternatives address some of the problems in the present system, but none of them address and correct all of the problems. Only the direct election alternative contains within it structural solutions to all the weaknesses in the present system.
