Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party will have a negative effect on the GOP.

I don't think Specter is going to start voting in lockstep with the Democrats. Maybe he will feel less pressured and vote a little more with Democrats but most importantly this switch symbolizes the GOP's shift towards becoming a regional or fringe party.

Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party will have a positive effect on the GOP.

He voted with Republicans 70% of the time and now that could end up being more like 40%-50%. When Franken swears in that will put the count at 60-40 in the Senate but the only possible major effect I see is that more moderates in the GOP become wary of how their party is changing. If they keep going down this road they risk fracturing the party and only being able to win in the reddest states.
