As I did in considering the recent nominations of John Roberts and Harriet Miers, I'll keep an open mind on President Bush's nomination of Samuel Alito until I have a chance to meet with him and carefully review his record and the Senate Judiciary Committee has a chance to question him.Meantime, I look forward to learning more about his qualifications and judicial philosophy. I have urged the president to find a sensible, centrist voice to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who fiercely defended our Constitution while serving on the High Court with great humility and integrity. This is the standard I will use in evaluating Judge Alito.
