Madden doesn't think that anyone else would have been able to get the Yankees to the World Series this year: Daily News .
.. .Yet even though Torre has gotten to the postseason every year, in Steinbrenner's world that's not enough. Not nearly enough. But if that's the reason for letting Torre go, then you'd better have a viable alternative. You'd better be able to explain why the person you're bringing in has a better chance of getting the Yankees to the World Series.... The fact is, no manager, not Torre, not La Russa, not Joe McCarthy or Casey Stengel, was getting this Yankees team to the World Series this year. ... If Steinbrenner and the rest of his inner circle look at this realistically, they would have no choice but to conclude that replacing Torre because he hasn't gotten the Yankees to the World Series in four years is not a good reason. Not when he's gotten them to the playoffs in all 12 seasons he's been on the job. ... Otherwise, it would appear the real reason Torre is being put through this is because Steinbrenner & Co. just feel that 12 years is enough, that, as Hank Steinbrenner said Tuesday as the family headed out of town and back to Tampa, "nothing lasts forever."In the absence of anyone who could have done better than Torre this year, or done better through all the years with the handling of the clubhouse, "nothing is forever" is a tough sell.
