I said "provide free college education", not "universal".

Meaning free college education is an option, but the pay-universities would still exist. So that the hurdle of "I can't get a good job because I can't go to college" would disappear, and you can still have competition because people with better education would get the better jobs still, but there is no absolute barrier saying that someone can't get the education needed to get jobs.

I still think this is a GREAT issue... but again, I think there needs to be some distinction between a base free / nationalized / universal system and the ability to pay supplements for "Ivy League" style educations, no?

I mean, isn't part of the point of higher education to "get ahead"... I just think going drastic might kill the crux of the debate...

friendly bump

I was about to propose this one too.

How about:

"Should the government provide free college education?"

Well, I think the debate would be more interesting if we add something about there also being other options people could choose than the free education being offered. Otherwise, there's no real competition in college and you change the entire education system to a socialist one... which would lead more people to say "no" to a universal system, I'd think...

You've probably worded it better than I have. I think it's important to make it clear that the question is about free, no-cost higher education. You could even simply ask this:

Should college be free for all students?

Okay, interesting issue...how about...

Should higher education in the U.S. be nationalized?

Should the U.S. have a universal education system for college?
