Kyle, I think you're thinking of the Marathon, which is a road race. Cross country (or XC) is unique for its off-road terrain.

Nice evidence Brian. And, obviously,  Organizations like the IOC and other governing bodies say 'no' b/c they havent done anything about reinstitution. Good issue.

Nice issue.

There isn't a cross-country event at the Olympics? I had no idea. Isn't there something similar to it that is run in terrain outside of the track?

I don't think we need the hyphen and we won't need to add "running" I guess if it's under "Summer Games."

Nice issue.  Let's approve under "Summer Olympic Games."

Runner's World

Paul Tergat, Five-Time World Champ, Thinks Cross Country Should Be In The Olympics
The revered Kenyan great, who is also the world marathon record holder, notes "cross country is a combination of sprinting, trotting and distance running combined into one. Therefore, the IOC should make cross country running an Olympic event in the future." To Tergat, cross-country is "the ultimate test for any runner worth his name." Cross country actually WAS an Olympic sport back in the heyday of Finland's Paavo Nurmi. More, http://www.nationmedia.com

I suppose you are probably right, I'm just getting my feet wet here with proposing issues, so I suppose we can scrap it.

Being a runner, I could get behind this. I'm just wary that not many PF's are taking a stand on this issue. I could be wrong -- I bet letsrun.com might have something on this.

Cross country was last an Olympic sport in 1924 and it is contested on the world stage every year, but no longer in the Olympics. With the introduction of new "sports" being considered for inclusion, such as ball-room dancing, it seems cross country deserves a spot. Cross country is currently contested in the winter on the international level, so it would also be interesting to discuss whether it should be included in the summer or winter games. Or the argument could be made that the current World Cross Country Championships is the best way to contest the sport.
