This issue is timely and direct. I'm for it.

Only a slight caveat - This does raise the ubiquitous federalism issue. If you worded it, "Should government[s] ban trans fats?" it would include what's already happening in some localities.

Or one might conclude that it should be Congress, not the FDA, that should make the call. (I.e., also a jurisdictional issue embedded in there, and an important one so long as Bush is president but the Democrats control Congress.) At the moment, the FDA designates trans fats as "generally recognized as safe." Some people suggest that that designation protects the industries against lawsuits. The FDA wouldn't have to even ban trans-fats, but just take away the GRAS status, and that could open up the floodgates for litigation. [But is even this likely, in a Bush administration?]

One might just say, "Should trans fats in commercially-prepared foods be banned?" But that's a bit wimpy/passive, and begs the question.

So, on balance, why not the FDA? The rest, as they say, is commentary.
