We need to shore up this issue. One "alternative energy policy" would be to use none whatsoever, which clearly is not what we're talking about. It's more the Thomas Friedman "Green is the new Red White and Blue" hypothesis we're aiming at.
How would increased use of alternative energy sources affect the US economy? -Positively -Negatively -Not significantly
If we have a short term issue, we need a long term issue... i don't think that's necessary. Let's stick with the big picture.

"How will an alternative energy policy effect the economy in the short term?" or something to get at whether our economy will suffer in the short term while we try to wean ourelves from oil.

Of course an alternative energy policy will affect the economy! Isn't that what energy policies are supposed to do? Limit or penalize the industries that you're trying to deemphasize, and help the alternatives that you're trying to promote. This is just too abstract to get a handle on.
Positively Negatively Not at all
Effect sounds fine to me.

What about the answers? Should we go impact or effect? Do we need the "no effect."

The issue as currently written really is not much to debate. The idea that "any" alternative energy policy could harm us is not one that people would debate, only that a wrong policy would. The question is what's a wrong policy. Esperanto's proposed revision is still a little wonkish, but at the very least, its a concrete debate.
i like esperanto's revision provided that we change the term "hurt". it's vague and ambiguous. people need to know what they are taking a stand on. should we do this in terms of degrees of impact on the economy? will slightly raise the economy, no effect, etc. ...
Depends on what the policy is... if it's "we're only going to burn coal with little american flags stamped on it," we'll be fine. but seriously folks, we should be more specific. Would an increase in alternative fuel consumption hurt the U.S. economy?
excellent idea. is this issue too factual? should it be something like which is more important? energy policies or economic policies? i'm not sure. i like it though. maybe as is??
One of the explanantions given by those against the idea of making drastic changes in our energy policy is that it will hurt our economy. I'm just trying to get something going oon this. Help, please...
