How will relations with China evolve as it rises towards economic and military superpower status?

China's ascent to superpower status will be largely peaceful.
There will be notable friction and growing pains between the US and China as each nation searches for its new role in a dual superpower world.
China's expanding economic and military power sparks a new Cold War.
This town ain't big enough for the both of us: WW III

Hehe..."It's a small world after all, it's a small world after all, it's a small world--" BANG BANG BANG!

Maybe the best approach is to merge that ride with this one:

Boy, 4, dies after riding Epcot attraction
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy died after a spin on a Walt Disney World spaceship ride so intense that it has motion sickness bags and several riders have been treated for chest pain.

Very reasonable point, Donovan. I see it. I certainly think facilitating "moving a notch" is in our interests here and I can see that it can be more face-saving and actually better organized to keep all of the arguments in the same issue. When we can finally get everyone together, I really want to sit down and write guidelines for issues and topics, etc. based on what we think works.

If people started to sing 'it's a small world after all' in harmony, I'd be the first to suggest another world war. It's amazing to me that nobody yet (to my knowledge) has opened fire on that ride. In fact, I think that would be a wonderful scene in a Bruce Willis movie.

Yes, in case you're wondering, I'm overworked right now.

Will the emergence of China as a competing superpower spark a new Cold War?
    Yes
    No

I agree with JoeC, and like the options.  Good array of choices.  Might consider tinkering with the equivalence among the options though - "largely peaceful" is not equivalent to "WWIII"...

I've figured out why I like having multi-options.  While a yes/no case means that causing someone to change their position is a clear demonstration that they read, responded to, and respected your argument, having a wider set of choices makes it more likely for someone to move a notch in a different direction.

Someone who expects "WWIII" for example, might be convinced upon presentation of evidence that "there'll be conflict but not necessarily disaster" - but would never agree that "all will sing 'it's a small world after all' in harmony."

    possible options

    • China's ascent to super power status will be largely peaceful.
    • There will be notable friction and growing pains between the US and China as each nation searches for its new role in a dual super power world.
    • China's expanding economic and military power sparks a new Cold War.
    • This town ain't big enough for the both of us. WW<3

I agree... can you (or anyone) propose the different positions?

    • There will be a new Cold War
    • China will require regime change
    • etc.

After having another look at this question, I'm thinking it may be too specific.  Maybe broaden it out to something like, "How will relations with China evolve as it rises towards economic and military superpower status?"  The wording there could use some tweaking but you get the idea of where I'm going here.
